Dosage calculation methods

Use the final concentration after mixing

Which concentration belongs in a dose-volume calculation after a powdered medicine is reconstituted?

Clinical context

Follow the product-specific diluent, preparation, storage and administration instructions. The label provides the final concentration.

The clinical connection

Use the labeled final concentration of the prepared medicine. Divide the prescribed dose in mg by that concentration in mg/mL to calculate mL.

Powder can change the final solution volume. The amount of diluent added is not necessarily the final total volume and is not a substitute for the labeled concentration.

Keep in mind

Check dose, final concentration, units and the prepared product before administration.
